MATIZ

OVERVIEW
MATIZ is a handmade ceramics brand built around the beauty of objects that aren’t perfectly identical. The idea was to create an identity that feels just as tactile, warm, and personal as the ceramics themselves. I wanted the brand to have a strong connection to the process of making — clay, hands, natural materials, texture, and the small imperfections that make every handmade piece unique. The visual identity combines simple, symbolic forms with an earthy and understated aesthetic. I developed the logo, typography, color palette, graphic elements, business cards, wrapping paper, packaging, and overall art direction. Every part of the identity was designed to feel connected, while still keeping the relaxed and handmade character of the brand. For the photography and packaging direction, I focused on natural textures, warm light, raw surfaces, and working pottery studio environments rather than making everything feel overly polished. The final identity feels contemporary and recognizable, but still has the warmth and character of traditional craft.

THE CHALLENGE
The main challenge was finding the right balance between traditional craft and a contemporary brand identity. Handmade ceramics already have so much texture and personality, so I didn’t want the branding to overpower the actual product or make it feel too commercial. Instead, I built the identity around the idea of “earth + hand” — the two things at the core of ceramics. This became the starting point for the symbols and visual language used throughout the brand. From there, I created a system that could work across everything from a small embossed business card to wrapping paper and packaging, while still feeling like the same MATIZ world. The goal was for someone to recognize the brand not only from the logo, but also from its patterns, materials, colors, photography, and overall feeling.
